Legislative Priorities

Agriculture is the cornerstone of Ventura County’s economy, supporting thousands of jobs throughout our region. It is also a proud part of our heritage, giving our community its unique beauty. In Congress, I have worked hard to support our farmers, farmworkers, and businesses that help feed the nation.

We have a sacred responsibility to those who have served our country in uniform. As a daughter, sister, and niece of veterans, I take no responsibility more personally and seriously. When I came to Congress, the very first committee I asked to serve on was the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. Both here in Ventura County and at the national level, I have made it my priority to put our nation’s veterans first. That means helping our servicemembers transition back into civilian life and caring for our veterans by ensuring they all receive the timely, high-quality healthcare and benefits they have earned and deserve. It also means tackling veterans homelessness and unemployment and addressing high suicide rates that continue to plague our nation’s heroes. Finally, as more and more women join our Armed Forces and return home after their service, I’ve made it a special focus to ensure that the VA is prepared for the changing veteran demographics. Women represent the fastest-growing veteran population and the VA needs to adapt to meet their needs. That means making sure the VA offers gender-specific healthcare, addressing the unique circumstances leading to female veteran suicide, and providing critical wrap-around services like job-training, child care, and caregiver assistance. It’s long past time to recognize the contributions that all veterans, female and male, have made to our great nation.

We must invest in our nation’s infrastructure including our airports, roads, bridges, and waterways that are vital to the movement of people and goods across our country. As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I have been working to address the infrastructure challenges facing Ventura County and the nation.

As Ventura County’s Representative in Congress, I view everything I do through the lens of how it will create jobs and grow our economy. From our ports, to our large and small businesses, to our naval base, to our agricultural community, I strive to advance federal policy that will support our diverse job creators.

The 26th District

The district includes most of Ventura County and a portion of Los Angeles County, including the cities of Oxnard, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Camarillo, Newbury Park, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, and Calabasas. If you are interested in browsing district-specific population statistics, you can look up Census data for the 26th District. I am honored to serve the residents of the 26th Congressional District of California.

Today marks the 62nd anniversary of the historic March on Washington — a moment that continues to inspire generations to fight for justice, equality, and civil rights.

While Dr. King’s challenge for our nation to fully live up to the promises of the Constitution remains unmet, we must ...carry forward their fight. Today and every day, we honor the legacies of the civil rights leaders who led this march, and we remain committed to building an America that fulfills its highest ideals.

My heart is broken for the children and families devastated by the horrific mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.

These children were praying when they fell victim to the gun violence epidemic that continues to plague our nation. Thoughts and prayers will never be ...enough.

To those who say this tragedy should not be politicized: it is the NRA’s politics that have allowed gun violence to become the leading cause of death for children in America.

We cannot and must not accept this as our normal. We cannot allow weapons of war to keep terrorizing our schools and communities. Congress has the responsibility to act, and we must act now.

105 years ago, the 19th Amendment became part of the Constitution, granting American women the right to vote.

On this Women’s Equality Day, we celebrate that achievement and honor the brave women of the suffrage movement. But we must also face the truth: today, the right to vote is under... attack.

While progress has been made, the fight for equality is far from over. We must protect the right to vote, achieve equal pay for equal work, safeguard reproductive freedom, and ensure women have the opportunity to succeed and thrive in every aspect of life.

Our democracy depends on it, and so does our nation’s promise of equality for all.

As schools across Ventura County and the Conejo Valley begin a new year, what should be a time of excitement and opportunity is instead filled with fear and uncertainty for too many students and their families.

I recently met with Ventura County Superintendent of Schools Dr. César Morales... and local school district superintendents to hear firsthand how the current political climate and reckless immigration activities are disrupting our community and destabilizing our education system.

Ventura County’s enrollment for K-12 schools was already in decline, and these callous detentions and apprehensions are making matters worse. The loss in revenue from declining enrollment and the looming uncertainty regarding federal funding is draining resources and leaving fewer dollars for the programs and services our children need. As a former school board member, I know that when budgets are squeezed, it is students’ emotional and educational supports that are often the first to go. That is unacceptable.

Crippling our public education system does not make America great. In partnership with school leaders and parents across our region, we are working to ensure every child has access to the resources they need to learn, grow, and thrive. And I will continue fighting for a future where every student is supported, safe, and free to pursue their dreams.
