Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) released the following statement after the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump:
“The actions of Donald Trump – leading up to and on the day of the insurrection and attack on our democracy – were morally indefensible. Donald Trump called upon his supporters, many who were white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and anarchists, to halt Congress from the vote of the majority of the American people.
“Knowing that armed individuals were in the audience, Donald Trump told them to march to the Capitol and stop Congress and the Vice President from carrying out their Constitutional duty of counting the electoral votes of the presidential election.
“When the Capitol was breached, Capitol Police were attacked. Members of Congress, Senators, and the Vice President were hunted. In the midst of the chaos, Donald Trump was indifferent to the assault on the Capitol and did nothing to stop it.
“Five people died that day. Many more could have, if it weren’t for the heroic actions of the U.S. Capitol Police.
“In the face of this dark time in our country’s history, Congress had a moral and Constitutional obligation to act. Led by Rep. Jamie Raskin, the House Impeachment Managers did an extraordinary job of presenting the clear evidence and compelling case of Donald Trump’s guilt.
“Today’s 57-43 Senate vote was the most bipartisan impeachment vote in our nation’s history. While it was not the outcome we had hoped for, my colleagues were successful in winning the hearts and minds of the American people. We know that Donald Trump was responsible for the insurrection, and history will not be kind to the Republican lawmakers who chose Donald Trump over our country.
“Ultimately, we still have much work to do to hold accountable those responsible for the attack on January 6th.
“As we move forward, we must also begin the hard work of restoring the American people’s faith in our democracy and our government. I am committed to working with my colleagues in Congress and President Biden to rebuild the promise of our great nation.”
