Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) issued the following statement today ahead of Monday’s 90th anniversary of the St. Francis Dam disaster:
“Ninety years ago Monday, the St. Francis Dam collapsed, setting off the second most deadly catastrophe in California state history. From the hundreds of victims who sadly lost their lives, to the heroic telephone operators and California Highway Patrol officers who tried to warn residents of the rushing waters, we recognize and honor the lives of those who were a part of this significant event in our region’s and our nation’s history.
“Last year, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill I co-authored to create a memorial to appropriately recognize this important part of our history. I am committed to working with my colleagues in the Senate, including Senators Feinstein and Harris, to get this bill to the President’s desk to commemorate the stories of local residents.”
