Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Brownley (D-CA) released the following statement on the anniversary of the assault on the United States Capitol.

“January 6, 2021, is a date that will most assuredly go down in infamy. It’s a black mark on our still young democratic experiment and not something any of us should take lightly. Those who participated, who encouraged, and who failed, and continue to fail, to condemn the insurrection will have their own dark place in history to contend with. The rest of us must remember that our country is great solely because we not only believe that all men are created equal, but that a democratic republic, while imperfect, is the best way to ensure that they can live equally.

“The perpetrators, the instigators, and the apologists will be held accountable, in one way or the other – as they should. But it’s much more important that we work exceptionally hard to remind each other that the success of our democratic experiment is inextricably dependent on the rule of law, at its very foundation. We cannot become a country where our elected leaders no longer understand that, nor have the decency to stand up for it. We simply cannot deliver on the promise of America without this foundation.

“While the shining light on the hill might have dimmed a little, I have no doubt that it will burn even more brightly as we reflect, as history bends toward justice, and as we do the hard work of reminding our family, friends, and neighbors of the values we share. I believe in this country, and most importantly, I believe in the ideals upon which it was founded. That the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are unalienable. We all share that in common. Let us start there.”
