Thousand Oaks, CA – Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) announced new tenant-based vouchers to combat veterans homelessness for the Cities of Oxnard and Ventura from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program, commonly referred to as HUD-VASH. From the FY2014 appropriations for HUD-VASH, the City of Oxnard will receive tenant-based vouchers worth $61,678 and the City of Ventura will receive tenant-based vouchers worth $90,508.
“The HUD-VASH program is a proven success story in our ongoing national efforts to end veterans’ homelessness,” said Brownley. “Our nation has a moral imperative to make sure that our veterans have the resources and the support they need to find suitable housing. As a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I am absolutely committed to ending veteran homelessness.”
“The Oxnard Housing Authority is proud and honored to be able to assist veterans within our community to find housing through the VASH program. We are grateful for the opportunity to provide for those that have done so much for our country,” said Carrie Sabatini, Interim Housing Department Director for the City of Oxnard.
“The Housing Authority is excited to have been awarded 10 additional VASH vouchers. This brings our total VASH voucher count to 85. The Housing Authority is committed to ensuring our homeless veterans obtain decent, safe, affordable housing and supportive services and this new funding brings us closer to that goal,” said Denise Wise, CEO of the Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura.
HUD-VASH provides permanent housing for eligible homeless veterans or homeless veterans with families. It combines Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance for homeless veterans with personalized case management and clinical services. These critical support services are provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs at our local VA medical centers and community-based outreach clinics.
