Washington, D.C.—Today, Representative Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village), included critical infrastructure security funding for Port Hueneme and other ports as part of the Homeland Security Appropriations Act.
“Protecting the safety and security of our communities means providing Port Hueneme and other ports with the means to do so,” said Congresswoman Brownley. “Port Hueneme and Naval Base Ventura County are key economic drivers in Ventura County. We must do everything we can to protect their facilities and our national security.”
“These grants are crucially important to our Port communities and we are appreciative of Congresswoman Brownley’s commitment to us and that community,” remarked Port of Hueneme Commission President, Jason Hodge.
“The Port applies the grants to heighten its security profile with the most advanced surveillance and equipment technologies as well as host vital training programs that involve over 50 first responders and law enforcement partners. We commend Congresswoman Brownley for her leadership, true understanding of the value of the grant program, and for her proven ability to get things done in Washington,” stated Kristin Decas, CEO & Port Director for Port of Hueneme.
Brownley’s amendment to the Homeland Security Appropriations Act funds the Port Security Grant program at $97.5 million. This program directly supports maritime transportation infrastructure security activities and is a critical homeland security initiative for Port Hueneme in Ventura County and ports across the country.
Funding for the Port Security Grant Program has seen significant cuts in recent years. Brownley’s amendment prevents further cuts to the grant program and returns funding to the FY 2012 level.
Previous Port Security Grant Program funding levels:
- FY 2013: $93,207,313
- FY 2012: $97,500,000
- FY 2011: $235,029,000
- FY 2010: $288,000,000
- FY 2009: $388,600,000
- FY 2008: $388,600,000
