Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) issued the following statement in response to Secretary Hagel’s announcement regarding the President’s FY2015 budget request and the proposal for a new round of a domestic Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC):
“Last month, I contacted the White House Office of Management and Budget to express my opposition to any new round of a domestic Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). While we must look for cost savings across all areas of the federal government and eliminate budget deficits, I strongly believe that we should look at outdated bases abroad before closing any facilities here at home. I am disappointed that Secretary Hagel has called for a new domestic BRAC, and I will be working with my colleagues in Congress to prevent it, just as I voted to do in FY2014. I am pleased, however, that Secretary Hagel remains committed to shifting our focus to the Asia-Pacific region, which increases the importance of Naval Base Ventura County to our future defense posture. I am hopeful that the budget request will continue robust funding for NBVC programs, including the Triton.”
