Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) issued the following statement on her vote against the House Republicans budget resolution (H.Con.Res.14).
“I am deeply disappointed in my Republican colleagues who continue to fail the American people and voted to advance such a shameful and self-serving budget resolution. Let me be clear. This resolution does not seek to set responsible parameters for government spending. Instead, this budget is a blatant scheme designed by House Republicans to line the pockets of wealthy donors, support big corporations, and appease the authoritarian whims of President Trump and Elon Musk – an unelected, unvetted, and unaccountable billionaire.
“In their fervor to be in good graces with Trump and Musk, House Republicans are punting an immense burden onto hard-working families. Their proposed budget gives trillions in tax cuts to the wealthiest people and corporations in our country, and it makes devastating cuts to programs that provide critical support to everyday Americans. This proposal forces even more middle-class families to live paycheck to paycheck, especially hurting those who rely on Medicaid, nutritional assistance programs, and veterans benefits.
“The House Republican ‘rip-off’ makes the largest cut to Medicaid in American history. Over 200,000 people are on Medicaid in California’s 26th Congressional District, and they are now at risk of losing their health care. Over 40 million Americans, including children, seniors, veterans, and working parents, risk losing access to nutrition assistance benefits that help them make ends meet and put food on the table. This Republican budget scheme is leaving families to fend for themselves against rising costs and food insecurity. This betrayal of working families is callous and utterly unacceptable.
“House Republicans have proven that they are willing to throw their own constituents under the bus for political gain and capital with Donald Trump. House Democrats will not stay silent in the face of this appalling disregard for the lives and livelihoods of American families. We will not give in to any compromise that puts politics over people. I voted no on this reckless and misguided resolution, and I will continue working with my colleagues to defeat this budget and restore our commitment to fairness and opportunity for all.”
