Washington, D.C.—Today, Representative Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) introduced the “Helping Homeless Veterans Act,” legislation to reauthorize homeless veterans programs.
“The number of homeless veterans in Ventura County and across the country is absolutely unacceptable,” said Congresswoman Julia Brownley “We have a moral obligation to ensure that each and every man and woman who served our country receive our support upon their return to civilian life. Each of these important veterans’ programs are critical to eliminating veterans’ homelessness.”
The Department of Veterans Affairs has a stated goal of ending veterans’ homelessness by 2015. To help VA achieve this goal, Brownley’s “Helping Homeless Veterans Act” reauthorizes the following programs:
- The Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) program;
- The Acquired Property Sales for Homeless Veterans program;
- The Therapeutic Transitional Housing component to the Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) program;
- The Incarcerated Veterans Transition program;
- The Homeless Veterans Reintegration program;
- The Grant and Per Diem Program for Homeless Veterans with Special Needs program; and
- The Supportive Services for Veteran Families program.
Currently in Ventura County, veterans make up 13% of the total homeless population. Without action by Congress, each of these important programs that work to reduce veterans’ homelessness will expire at the end of this year.
