Washington D.C. – Representative Julia Brownley released the following statement following final passage of the Violence Against Women Act:

“Today’s reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act is long overdue. The passage of this bill represents a renewed national commitment to provide protection for all victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. Earlier this week, House Republican Leadership pushed for an amendment that would have rolled back essential protections for members of the LGBT community, Native Americans, and immigrant women. Today, that amendment failed and Congress came together to pass the strong, bipartisan Senate bill that will make our communities safer by expanding protections to minority groups and ensuring all Americans receive equal treatment under the law. I applaud the president for his commitment to sign this critical legislation into law.”
