Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, Representative Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) and Congressman Bill Cassidy (R-Baton Rouge), Co-Chairs of the Congressional Dyslexia Caucus, hosted a briefing for policymakers and the public to bring awareness to the challenges faced by individuals with dyslexia, especially students.
“Together, Congressman Cassidy and I are working to raise public awareness about dyslexia so that students with dyslexia have the opportunities to receive the educational tools and resources they need to succeed in school, and thrive as the person they were meant to be,” said Congresswoman Julia Brownley. “I am so glad that our panelists Ben Cooper, Madeline Hyams, and Kathy Stratton were able to join us for this kick-off event.”
The event began with a presentation on the science of dyslexia by medical expert Dr. Sally Shaywitz, a director of the Yale School of Dyslexia & Creativity. Afterwards, a panel moderated by Katherine Schantz, head of the Lab School in Washington, D.C., shared their experiences with an audience of Congressional staff, representatives from the Department of Education and the Department of Justice, advocates from across the country, and interested members of the public. The roundtable discussion served as an important opportunity to highlight the need to improve classroom and testing accommodations for students with dyslexia.
