When she’s on the job in Washington, D.C., nearly 3,000 miles separate U.S. Rep. Julia Brownley from her constituents in Ventura County.

Congresswoman Julia Brownley, D-Westlake Village, has hit the ground running as part of the new Democratic majority in the U.S. House with several new bills aimed at addressing local and national issues.

With 2018 now gone, and with it the 115th Congress, federal lawmakers left a lot on the table that would help veterans nationwide. One such bill would require the VA to provide dental care. The legislation, which was reintroduced by Rep. Julia Brownley (D-Calif.) on Jan. 3, require the VA to provide dental care to veterans, just as they provide medical care. 

Rep. Julia Brownley (D-Calif.) is kicking off the new Congress by introducing a bill that would rewrite federal laws with more gender neutral terms.

Right now, just 17 states and the District of Columbia allow same-day voter registration, and the bill, introduced by Rep. Julia Brownley (D-CA), would mandate that the rest of the country join them.

This week, the Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Programs Reauthorization Act, legislation co-authored by Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) and Congressman Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) to fight veteran homelessness by strengthening job training programs, was signed into law. The bill passed Congress as part of the Veterans Benefit and Transition Act of 2018.

U.S. Rep. Julia Brownley announced the funds, which will be used to strengthen local infrastructure, including dredging of the two harbors, on Tuesday. She noted that all three locations play a key role in Ventura County’s economy and said the new funds would bolster their operations.

Rep. Julia Brownley (D-Calif.), who represents the district Canley calls home, said in an interview that several men who served with Canley in Vietnam brought his case to her office in 2014. 

Rep. Julia Brownley (D-Calif.) wrote the necessary legislation to upgrade Canley’s Navy Cross after Defense Secretary James Mattis wrote her in December that Congress would have to waive the law requiring Medals of Honor to be awarded within five years of the actions justifying the award.

Sergeant Major Canley, who served as a Marine for 28 years, has been recognized for his heroism before with the Navy Cross as well as two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart, according to Representative Julia Brownley, Democrat of California, who represents the district where he now lives. He was her guest at Mr. Trump’s State of the Union address in January.

In 2014, one of Canley’s fellow servicemembers contacted Rep. Julia Brownley, the California Democrat who represents Canley’s home district, to request that Canley’s Navy Cross, two Bronze Stars and Purple Heart be upgraded to the nations’ highest military honor.

Brownley, top Democrat on the House Veterans’ Affairs Health Subcommittee, said in a statement the estimated 160,000 transgender veterans in the United States are deserving of coverage and “have put their lives on the line in order to protect our constitutionally protected freedoms.”

The quiet 80-year-old Marine nominated for heroism during the Vietnam War said the news came in a direct conversation a week ago Monday, the same day Trump announced his pick for the U.S. Supreme Court. The conversation’s message was confirmed this week by the office of U.S. Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Westlake Village

Brownley, D-Westlake Village, who helped in the congressional efforts to fund the Triton program, spoke during Thursday’s gathering.

“I want to highlight the advantages of cycling because its better for people’s health than driving, good for the environment and a great recreational activity,” said Brownley, D-Westlake Village. “It’s also a mode of transportation we need to use more, since it gets cars off the road.”

A group of 127 House Democrats is calling on White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Mick Mulvaney to reject a proposal that would roll back ObamaCare’s anti-discrimination protections for transgender patients.

Representatives for several local politicians celebrated the groundbreaking with port officials, while U.S. Rep. Julia Brownley provided a brief keynote speech. Brownley advocated for the port to win the grant by writing letters, making phone calls and otherwise working to market the port to the Economic Development Administration.

Despite their importance, producers of the crop tend to be overlooked, said Rep. Julia Brownley, who toured Sun Valley Group’s Oxnard farm earlier this month. Brownley, D-Westlake Village, decided to tour the farm due to the importance of Mother’s Day to the industry and to raise awareness of the crop.
