Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA), Congresswoman Ann McLane Kuster (D-NH), and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) introduced two bills, the Zero Food Waste Act and the Cultivating Organic Matter through the Promotion Of Sustainable Techniques (COMPOST) Act, to reduce the amount of food wasted in the U.S. and to redirect food waste to composting projects. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced companion legislation in the U.S. Senate. 

Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley announced Rohan Philip, a ninth grader from Oak Park High School, as the winner of the 2022 Congressional App Challenge for California’s 26th Congressional District. Rohan created VetConnect, an app that helps veterans on their journey to better mental health.

Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley introduced a legislative package of three bills to further advance her work to expand and improve health care for our nation’s veterans. The bills include the Elizabeth Dole Home- and Community-Based Services for Veterans and Caregivers Act of 2023, the Veterans Infertility Treatment Act of 2023, and the Department of Veterans Affairs Continuing Professional Education Modernization Act.

Today, Congresswoman Brownley introduced the Protecting Homeowners from Disaster Act, legislation that will restore the tax deduction for uninsured property and casualty losses that was eliminated by the Republicans’ 2017 tax law.

Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley introduced the Same Day Registration Act, her first bill of the 118th Congress. Specifically, the legislation would require all states to allow same-day voter registration for federal elections.

Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley issued the following statement regarding the recent enactment of legislation she authored to designate the U.S. Post Office located at 1961 North C Street in Oxnard, California as the “John R. Hatcher III Post Office Building.” John R. Hatcher III was a prominent community leader, staunch civil rights champion, and a lifelong resident of Oxnard. 

Congresswoman Julia Brownley applauded the passage of the FY2023 government funding package and delivers historic investments in America’s families, workers, and communities including significant increases to critical social programs that continue health coverage for 40 million children enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP, improve our preparedness for future public health emergencies, expand veterans’ access to health care, and strengthen emergency disaster support to victims of hurricanes and wildfires throughout our country. Congresswoman Julia Brownley applauded the House Oversight and Reform Committee passage of the Continuity for Operators with Necessary Training Required for ATC Contract Towers (CONTRACT) Act, legislation which would eliminate financial disincentives that make it hard for federal contract towers to recruit and hire trained, well-qualified, retired FAA controllers. The bill (H.R.1283) was reported out of the full committee by voice vote.

Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley applauded the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs passage of the Veterans Infertility Treatment Act, legislation she authored which would make infertility care, including in-vitro fertilization, a part of VA health care for veterans struggling with infertility, regardless of marital status, sexual orientation, service-connection, or need for donated genetic material.

Senator Krysten Sinema introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
