An effort to name an Oxnard post office after a local civil rights leader took one step forward last week after passage of a bill in the U.S. House.

Congresswoman Julia Brownley, D-Westlake, introduced the legislation to name the building at 1961 N. C St. as the John R. Hatcher, III Post Office Building, according to a news release.

An effort to rename a South Coast post office after a longtime civil rights leader has taken a big step forward.

Democratic Congresswoman Julia Brownley of Westlake Village authored the legislation, which now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Today, Congresswoman Julia Brownley applauded House passage of H.R. 5659, which would designate the United States Post Office located at 1961 North C Street in Oxnard, California as the “John R. Hatcher, III Post Office Building.” Brownley introduced legislation to recognize John R. Hatcher, III’s life and work as a respected community leader and civil rights champion.
